Now with Love
By Rhys Pickers Smith

Wait under the streetlight
I'll be there soon
Rain never stopped a date before
Catching sight of her,
My heart jumps higher than the dark clouds
Handing her my palm, she daintily walks,
While I stumble over lines and phrases lost in the night
A uniquely savoured smell compels us inside a small café
Fumbling for a chair, I awkwardly steady it for her gracing presence
Smiling anxiously, I bumble over the menu
Her warming eyes bringing yet no comfort
Butterflies fill my stomach,
A frugal meal I order, her the same
How I wish I'd know her all my life
This only unnerves me further
Talking between minute portions we chew little fat and read more between it
When all is finished my calmed state leaps once again to my throat
Bill split, our hands hold again
Swinging back to where my house lies,
The same lamppost looms ahead
My heart sinks and rises with our arms rhythm
Untouched promises could this false sun enlighten
Turning, we face each other
She looks right into me, see past all I have mistaken
How am I to look anywhere else?
All worries and hopes outside our gaze seem obsolete
We kissed under that light
A new beginning that never was forgotten
